Roger Scott

BVM&S MRCVS

Roger is the managing partner and started the practice in 2001. Roger grew up in Hexham and attended QEHS. He was animal mad as a youngster, breeding and showing guinea pigs at Hexham fur and feather society and breeding and racing pigeons. He used to attend the markets with his father Dennis who was an auctioneer and spent the holidays working on his uncle's farm. Roger qualified from Edinburgh and worked first in York, Hampshire and Newcastle before returning to Hexham to set up the practice. Roger is married to Alison and they have three children. A late starter at leisure activities, he took up skiing and sailing aged 40 and is rumoured to now have a different set of skis for each day of the week!

Sarah Awburn

Veterinary Nurse

As a veterinary Nurse Sarah is involved with smalll animal anaesthetic monitoring, assisting with veterinary procedures and the care of in patients. Sarah started as a work experience student at the practice in 2005 and then began as a veterinary nursing assistant the following year. Sarah is the self-appointed practice entertainments manager and can always be trusted to plan a non-stop night out!

Colin Mitchell

BVM&S CertEP MRCVS

Colin joined Roger Scott in 2003 and became a partner in the practice a year later, he is head of the equine department and is involved in the decision making within the practice. Colin originates from the east coast of Scotland and attended veterinary school in Edinburgh. He worked in practice in Northumberland for five years prior to joining Roger. Colin gained his post graduate certificate in Equine Practice in 2004. Colin is married to Liz and has two young children Shona and Oliver. In his spare time Colin  enjoys spending time with his family, fell-running, mountain biking and skiing.

Toni Barton

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

 As a veterinary nursing assistant Toni works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties. She joined the practice in 2007 and has always had a keen interest in horse riding and hunting.

Lee-Anne Oliver

BVM&S CertAVP(cattle) MRCVS

Lee-Anne graduated from Edinburgh University in 2007. After a short spell in equine practice she joined the farm team at Scott Mitchell in 2008 with an enthusiasm for all large animal work. Married to a suckler farmer on Hadrian's Wall Lee-Anne enjoys helping out on the farm in her spare time with her son Aaron. After 12 months working with the Scottish Agricultural College at Dumfries Lee-Anne retuned to the practice in June 2014 with additional expertise in veterinary pathology and herd health production management and became a partner in 2015. Lee-Anne has completed the Advanced Veterinary Practitioner Qualification in Cattle Health and Production.

Joanne Carins

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Joanne joined the team at Scott Mitchell Associates in 2014. She is a local farmers daughter so is familar with working with all animals.  As a veterinary nursing assistant Joanne works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties.

Angus Simpson

BVetMed MRCVS

Angus qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1990 which makes him older than he cares to remember. He has worked in the Hexham area for the last 20 years, joining Scott Mitchell Associates in 2004. His first posting was in Yorkshire where he met his wife Louise who was a nurse at the same practice. Angus is head of small animal surgery and is well known for his quiet and calm nature with his patients and clients alike. He and Louise live in Hexham with their two children and their border terrier Princess Bella Bunty (who was not named by Angus!). Angus likes to keep fit in the Gym and Pool. Did you know he was once a top dinghy sailor and went on to teach the sport to others?

Alison Cunningham

BVM&S MRCVS

Alison was brought up in Scotland and qualified from Edinburgh in 1990. Following her first job in mixed practice in Yorkshire she has worked in solely small animal practices in Yorkshire, Surrey and Nottingham before joining Scott Mitchell Associates in 2002. Alison works part time and is head of small animal medicine. In her spare time she enjoys cycling, gardening and skiing.

Gillian Colley

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Gillian joined the practice in 2009, as a veterinary nursing assistant she works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and covering reception duties. Gillian has a wealth of farming experience having worked as a shepherdess, milking dairy cows and completed an OND in sheep management and a cattle AI course. She has retained her interest in cattle with her highland pets "Shona" and "Hamish" and she also enjoys walking Charlie her lurcher. Gillian can often be found working a late or night shift and even in the wee small hours she is cheerful and enthusiastic bringing a "ray of sunshine" to the worried owner, weary vet or nervous pet.

Julie Craig

Farm Surgery Manager

Julie joined the practice in 2001 and is a fundamental member of the farm department; organising vets, co-ordinating vaccine orders, booking appointments and generally making sure everything in the farm department runs smoothly. Julie will be based in the new practice at Tow Law. A Weardale farmer's daughter and wife she is often found helping out on the farm with her two boys Robert and Ridley.

Liz Mitchell

MA VetMB CertEP MRCVS

Liz graduated from Cambridge in 1998 and spent five years in mixed practice in Devon and Warwickshire before returning to  Cumbria where she worked for eight years as Director in charge of equine at Paragon Veterinary Group near Penrith. In 2007 Liz attained the Royal College certificate in equine practice. Liz and Colin were married in December 2009 and their daughter Shona was born in September 2010 and son Oliver born in July 2012. Following her maternity leave in May 2011 Liz joined Scott Mitchell Associates working part time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Liz has owned, ridden and competed horses for many years prior to hanging up her boots to run around after children! When spare time exists Liz also enjoys skiing, walking, fell running and mountain biking.

Charlotte McGivney

BVM&S PhD MRCVS

Charlotte has recently returned to work at Scott Mitchell Associates, following a period in New Zealand and Dublin completing her equine suregry training and PhD in equine genetics. Charlotte has a yound son and works part time and has special interest in equine surgery and lameness. In her spare time she enjoys riding and spending time with her family.

Rachel Davison

Laboratory Technician

Rachel joined the practice in February 2013 as laboratory technician. She is involved with running blood samples and worm egg counts from most species of animal. Rachel has previous experience of working in a veterinary practice prior to a career break for her two children. Rachel has owned, ridden, competed and bred horses all her life.

Claire Davies

BVSc MRCVS

Claire qualified from Liverpool in 2004 and after a brief spell as a locum she returned to her home patch to join Scott Mitchell Associates in 2005 . Claire is a keen member of the farm animal team and is a Lantra approved trainer involved in delivering Farmskills courses. She also has a passion for horses and enjoys riding her pony, Toby. Claire helps out with her husband's family business and can often be seen driving the Davies Tractors HGV around the countryside. In her small amount of spare time she enjoys playing uni-hoc and looking after her young daughter.

Mandy Donaldson

Head of Administration

Mandy joined the practice in 2009 as a  farm and equine receptionist, she has recently moved into her new role as head of administration. Mandy has ample experience in the agricultural and equine sectors, she holds an HND in Agriculture and was previously employed at Hexham Auction mart and Kirkley Hall where she was responsible for organising the short land-based courses. Mandy's family settled in Hexham 11 years ago, she has three sons and a daughter. The family are keen horse and pony owners and riders and most of Mandy's time away from work is taking up with equine activities and transporting her children around the country for various sporting activities, so there is always a story to be told come Monday morning!

Jennifer Foley

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Jennifer joined the practice in 2010,  as a veterinary nursing assistant she works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties. Jennifer has lots of experience of farming and animal care, she has previously worked in a small animal practice and enjoys helping out on the family farm. In her spare time she enjoys socialising with her friends.

Sam Eke

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Sam joined the practice in 2017. As a veterinary nursing assistant Sam works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties, three days a week she is based in the equine department. Sam has lived in Otterburn nearly her life, she currently lives with her fiancé on his farm just outside Otterburn with their 2 dogs, Ollie the Jack Russel and Nellie the diva dachshund cross. She completed a Bsc in Equine sports science and Equestrian psychology at Nottingham Trent University. she's had a keen interest in horse since a young age and worked as head girl for 6 seasons at Girsonfield stud and racing and more recently worked as a free lance groom. She has her own horse Jacob who she enjoys competing in dressage and eventing in her spare time.

Joanna Gibson

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Joanna joined the practice at the end of 2014 As a veterinary nursing assistant. Joanna assits with equine in patients and procedures on Tuesday at Hexham and is based at the surgery in Tow Law for 3 days a week.

Hayley Cook

MRCVS

Hayley joined the equine team in November 2015. She qualified from Liverpool in Summer 2014 before spending a year in equine practice in York. Hayley grew up riding ponies and is now learning to scuba dive and training for an open water swim.

Steph Cook

BVM&S MRCVS

Steph originates from Hawick and graduated from Edinburgh in 2014 and spent a year in mixed practice in Cumbria, before going into equine practice in Lancashire for 2 years. Steph joined Scott Mitchell Associates in August 2017 and is involved in all aspects of equine work. She has a keen interest in lameness and medicine. In her speare time she enjoys looking after and riding her own horses.

Suzanne Gilhome

Veterinary Nursing Assistant and Laboratory Technician

As a veterinary nursing assistant Suzanne works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and covering reception duties.On Wednesday Suzanne works in the laboratory testing blood samples and examining slides. Suzanne has experience of working horses and enjoys walking her wire fox terrier Stanley and spending time with her family.

Mandy Gown

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

 As a veterinary nursing assistant Mandy works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and reception duties.

Lauren Porteus

MRCVS

Lauren is a keen and enthusiatic member of the farm team. She originates from Slaley and went to school at Broomhaugh, Allendale and Haydon Bridge and graduated from Nottingham University in July 2016. In her spare time she plays netball, skis and bakes cakes!

Cam Collins

BVM&S MRCVS

Cam was born and bred in Stocksfield and has lived in the area all his life. After attending school in Newcastle he completed his veterinary training at The Dick Vet school in Edinburgh in July 2017 and started work at Scott Mitchell in the August. He is gaining experience in all the departments but has a particulat interest in farm work. In his spare time he enjoys shooting and is a member of a local syndicate. He also enjoys the outdoors venturing to the Lakes and Highlands when he can.

Ivana Pintar

DVM MRCVS

Ivana first came to Scott Mitchell Associates in 2014 as part of her Erasmus exchange programme in Hexham. Having proved to be an excellent student who fitted well in the team we were delighted to welcome her back in 2017 as an assisant veterinary surgeon. After graduating in January 2016, she started to work in a small animal clinic in Varazdin, Croatia, where she was born and raised. She has a passion for horse riding to which she plans to return again. She loves to travel so spends her leisure time satisfying her wanderlust by exploring the United Kingdom with her partner.

Debbie Hornby

Equine Veterinary Nurse REVN

Debbie was grown up and worked in the area all her life. Prior to joining Scott Mitchell Associates in 2006, Debbie had worked on various equine yards in the area gaining a wealth of experience at working with horses of all shapes, sizes and temperaments. After two years hard work in 2011 Debbie qualified as an equine veterinary nurse. Debbie is responsible for managing the equine hospital and nursing care of the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with equine procedures and surgery both in the clinic and out on visits. Out of work she spends her time caring for and exercising her horses, dogs, pet sheep and rabbit.

Brendon Jackson

Financial Controller

Brendon is a qualified accountant and is in charge of the business accounts and financial management of the practice. A native South African he lives in Allendale and joined the practice in spring 2015. Brendon's interests include running and cycling.

Josh Lancaster

Farm Surgery Receptionist & Stock Controller

Josh joined Scott Mitchell Associates in Spring 2016. His duties in farm reception involve co-ordinating farm calls and enquiries and provides the front line when dealing with clients and visitors. Josh also is in charge of stock control in the surgery which is no mean feat with two pharmacys and ten vets cars to keep control of! Josh is married with a young son and enjoys dancing and going to festivals as well as spending time at his caravan in Scotland.

Karen Leach

Small Animal Receptionist

Karen joined the practice in 2006. As a small animal receptionist Karen is responsible for managing apppointments, enquiries and small animal payments.

Amy Lee

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Amy joined the practice in 2014.  As a veterinary nursing assistant Amy works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties.

Jayne Longlands

Practice Manager

Jayne joined Scott Mitchell Associates in January 2016 as Practice Manager.  Brought up on a North Tyne Hill Farm, she still lives locally although has since moved further down the valley.  Jayne left school at 18 and has worked in an office environment since; gaining many management experiences, skills and qualifications along the way, the most notable being a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management which she is putting to good use in her role.   A country girl at heart, she has always enjoyed rural pursuits, attending and getting involved in countryside events.  Jayne also likes to keep healthy and take part in fitness activities.

Sarah Matthewson

Small Animal Project and Laboratory Project Manager

Sarah is a local girl and joined the practice in 2010 after completing a Diploma in Human Physiology from the University of Leeds. Her role involves the management and administration of health schemes and promotions within the practice. At home Sarah enjoys walking Seb, her Wire Fox Terrier, caring for her small flock of Herdwick sheep, working on her fiancé's family farm and playing the clarinet in Whittonstall Community Band.

Marie McLoughlin

Laboratory Technician

Marie joined the team in 2017 and assists in the laboratory processing blood samples and examining slides. She has a degree in foundation science from the University of Nottingham. Marie originates from London but moved to Northumberland as a child. She has an interest in dog training and is working towards membership of the Institute of Modern Dog Training (IMDT). Marie doesn't have any pets of her own but in her spare time she enjoys spending time with other people's pets dog walking and training.

Gill Parr

Veterinary Nurse RVN

Gill joined Scott Mitchell Associates in 2006 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2011. Gill is involved in the day to running of the small animal hospital including anaesthesia and in patient care, she also runs nurse clinics for geriatric animals and to assist with weight management.  Gill has lots of experience with all types of animals; she has taught and competed in all equine spheres and worked with dairy cows, youngstock, sheep and beef. Gill has a rescue border collie and enjoys dog training, agility and obedience.

Vikki Ord

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Vikki joined the practice in 2018 and works a shift pattern to provide the 24 hour care of the in-patients. Vikki lives on a farm near Haydon Bridge and helps out with all manner of things when she can. She is married to Kenneth and is kept busy with her 2 little girls Annabelle and Philippa aged 6 and 2. Vikki is returning to work after having time off to bring up Philippa but previously worked in both the Advertising and Accounts Department at the Hexham Courant.  

Natasha Richardson

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

Natasha joined the team at Scott Mitchell in spring 2016. She holds a BSc (hons) degree in Animal Behaviour and BTEC national diploma in animal management and has previous experience as a boarding kennel manager. As a veterinary nursing assistant Natasha works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and covering reception duties. In her spare time she enjoys walking and training her two dogs Luna and Maya.

Ami Ridley

Farm Receptionist

Ami came to work at Scott Mitchell Associates in 2009 into her first job after leaving school. Ami was not short of experience however having lived and helped on the mixed family farm with dairy, beef and sheep all her life. She has also owned and ridden ponies and then horses since the tender age of two. Ami is a dedicated farm receptionist and helps co-ordinate the farm calls and assists with dispensing medicines. Aimi's hobbies still firmly revolve around farming, horses and hunting, now with a strong element of socialising into the mix!

Dennis Scott

Agricultural Industry Consultant

Dennis has been a part of the practice since its inception in 2001. In 1948 Dennis began his career as an auctioneer and went on to manage many of the livestock markets in the North East. Dennis comes from a farming background and has been heavily involved over the years in showing and judging cattle and sheep. Dennis is father to Roger and assists in the practice in many ways. He is responsible for deliveries and ground maintenance. Dennis specialises in whisky tasting and is a good club member of the Herefored Late Risers and the Lockerbie Curling Club amongst others!

Ali Short

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

As a veterinary nursing assistant Ali works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and performing reception duties. Ali lives on a small farm in Hexhamshire with her husband Lewis, daughter Lillie, Belle her dog and Merlin her horse. As well as working at Scott Mitchell she is also a qualified Dental Nurse working in a practice in Corbridge. In her spare time she enjoys riding and competing Merlin, walking and spending time with her family.

Ellie Scandle

Equine Receptionist

Ellie Scandle has been recently appointed into the role of equine receptionist at Scott Mitchell and is able to use her equine background and local knowledge to assist with call co-ordinations and handling client requests. Ellie lives in the Shire and is just finishing her school studies in Hexham. Ellieis a keen horse rider and has beenan active member of both Pony Club and Young Farmers.

Kirsten Smith

Veterinary Nurse Assistant & Animal Physiotherapist& Equine Receptionist

Kirsten has a wealth of experience working with horses and is a qualified animal physiotherapist. A local from Hexham, she joined Scott Mitchell Associates in November 2013. As a veterinary nursing assistant Kirsten works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and reception duties. Kirsten also provides equine physiotherapy services both at the surgery and as a mobile service.

Becky Stainthorp

Small Animal Receptionist and Veterinary nursing Assistant

Becky started work at Scott Mitchell Associates in 2008 having previously worked as a dog walker, groom and at a kennels and cattery. Becky holds a Diploma in Equine Studies from Derby college. As a small animal receptionist Becky is responsible for managing apppointments, enquiries and small animal payments. Becky enjoys looking after both the animals at work and her two dogs, three cats, two guinea pigs, her rabbit and cornsnake. In her spare time she enjoys long walks with her two dogs, riding and spending time with her daughter.

Helen Thoburn

Farm Project Manager

Helen joined Scott Mitchell Associates in a new role as farm project manager. Helen has lived in the area all her life and has a wealth of farm animal experience having previously worked as an cattle embryology technician involved in advanced breeding techniques.

Jade Thomson

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

As a veterinary nursing assistant Natasha works a shift pattern helping to provide our excellent 24 hour care service for the in-patients as well as assisting the vets with procedures and covering reception duties.

Bryony Turnbull

Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Bryony’s interests and hobbies include hiking, cycling in thsummer, walking holidays with family, spending time looking after her 3 cats Gandalf, Winnie & Molly, and walking her border collie Moss.

Darren Tones

Veterinary Nursing Assistant
